Food safety has been a focus for Wiers Farm Inc. since the turn of this century.

While that work is ongoing, a new look at sustainability comes forward for Wiers.

Ben Wiers, an owner, said his packinghouse lighting is being retrofitted this year with LED lighting to be more sustainable. This lighting decreases emissions and electric consumption.

“We are trying to lower the carbon footprint,” he said. “It takes several years to get a full return” on the current investment. “But we look at the long-term.”

Stater Bros. Markets is making a donation of 47,000 pounds of fresh apples to two food banks as a result of its participation in the Take a Bite Out of Hunger program sponsored by FirstFruits Marketing of Washington. 

Colorful Harvest has begun bringing in the first loads of its unique Ruby Jewel sweet red corn for 2015. This year’s harvest has kicked off about seven days earlier than expected, quickly moving the season into high gear.

PHILADELPHIA — The Eastern Produce Council celebrated Cinco de Mayo during its third annual meeting at the Philadelphia Wholesale Produce Market, here. A variety of sponsors provided delicious foods and drinks, including Avocados from Mexico, Dole, Vision Import Group and Pear Bureau Northwest.
