Organic fresh produce grew sales by 5.5 percent in 2021, topping $9 billion for the first time, and outpacing conventionally grown produce in year-over-year gains in both sales and volume, according to the 2021 Organic Produce Performance Report released today by Organic Produce Network and Category Partners.

Inserra Supermarkets Inc., which operates 22 ShopRite stores and two Price Rite Marketplaces in New Jersey and New York, announced Jim Dorey will join the organization as senior vice president, effective immediately. Dorey will eventually transition to the position of president and chief operating officer, a role currently filled by Ron Onorato, who has announced his intention to retire within the next two years.

Stop & Shop and Boston-based nonprofit About Fresh have partnered to expand access to fresh and healthy foods for people in need across New England. Through About Fresh’s Fresh Connect program, participants can use prepaid debit cards "prescribed" by healthcare providers to purchase healthy food. With this announcement, Stop & Shop becomes the first major retailer to make this produce as a prescription program available.
