Calavo Growers Inc. is anticipating a significant increase in the number of avocados it handles from Peru this summer as its source has seen a jump in production.

“All of our Peru supplies come from one ranch in Viru, Peru,” said Rob Wedin, executive vice president of sales for Calavo Grown. “Our 2022 Peru program represents a 75 percent increase over 2021.”

The supplies of organic avocados have been dwindling as heavy demand and high prices caused growers in both Mexico and California to pick that fruit at a faster clip as their season progressed. Though conventional fruit has also experienced very high FOB prices, the gap between conventional and organic has steadily increased.

Just now, reinforcements are beginning to arrive as avocados from Peru have joined the mix. There is great expectation that Peru will play a very significant and increasingly important role in the summer marketing of organic avocados in the United States.

The Peruvian Avocado Commission, and its Avocados from Peru marketing  brand, has robust plans for Peru-sourced avocados in the United States this year and beyond.

The first shipments of Peru’s ample avocado supplies landed on U.S. shores in late March. The latest projection points to the country’s avocado exporters sending almost 240 million pounds of fruit to the U.S. market by the time the last piece of fruit is sold sometime in October, which would be about a 25 percent increase over 2021 and the largest volume the South American country has ever shipped to the United States.

Ten years ago the California Avocado Commission first observed June officially as California Avocado Month, and it is enthusiastically promoting this long-standing tradition. As an ode to the past 10 years, the commission has enlisted the culinary talents of Southern California native Chef Nyesha Arrington to create two delicious and seasonal recipes that prominently feature California avocados, which are grown by about 3,000 California avocado growers with groves from San Diego to Monterey.
