ATLANTA -- "What'll ya have? What'll ya have? What'll ya have?"

That mantra is as familiar to Georgians as the Pledge of Allegiance, and many have heard it since childhood. Since 1928, The Varsity restaurant has been welcoming diners with that question and serving up fresh, made-from- scratch fare like burgers, dogs, french fries and maybe the world's best onion rings from its landmark location at North Ave. and Spring St. in downtown Atlanta.

In a bipartisan show of support for the United Fresh Foundation's A Salad Bar in Every School campaign, U.S. Reps. Steve Driehaus (D-OH) and Jean Schmidt (R-OH) were scheduled to cheer the dedication of a new salad bar May 10 at Cincinnati's Academy of World Languages.

They were to be joined by Chiquita Brands Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Fernando Aguirre, Cincinnati Public Schools Superintendent Mary Ronan and United Fresh Produce Association President and CEO Tom Stenzel.

The Canadian Produce Marketing Association's Dan Dempster advised the association's board of directors at its Vancouver 2010 meeting that he would be retiring as CPMA president on May 1, 2011.

Mr. Dempster began his career with CPMA on April 17, 1977, and assumed the position of president on April 1, 1983. During his term with the CPMA, the association's membership has increased significantly to 720 Canadian and international members. The CPMA's convention and trade show has also experienced great growth, with over 3,000 visitors expected at this year's event.

HerbThyme Farms, headquartered in Compton, CA, will vigorously fight a class action lawsuit that was recently filed in California by attorney Raymond Boucher alleging mislabeling of organic products from at least one of its facilities.

The firm was first notified of the suit in late April, and it quickly released a statement briefly explaining the origin of the charges and vowing to "defend our products and reputation vigorously."

The first exports of New Zealand's pipfruit and kiwifruit began arriving in North America in May.

Peter Beaven, chief executive officer of Pipfruit New Zealand, said that pipfruit exports are expected to be down approximately 14 percent compared to 2009. "We expect the total export crop to be around 265,000 tons compared with 307,000 last year," he told The Produce News in late April.

IDAHO FALLS, ID -- The Idaho Grower Shipper Association, the trade organization representing shippers in the Idaho potato industry, is joining with CHEP, the global leader in pallet and container pooling solutions, to support the group's educational activities. In return, the association will promote the benefits of CHEP pallet pooling to its many members.
