Don Armock, president and partner of Riveridge Produce Marketing Inc. in Sparta, MI, is ready to move a quality apple crop into the pipeline this season. “We’ve got a great crop coming,” he told The Produce News Aug. 17. “It’s not the biggest [crop], but one of the largest.”

Riveridge represents third-, fourth- and fifth-generation growers throughout Michigan and markets roughly one-third of the state’s fresh apple crop annually.

G&D Wallace Inc./Wallace Farms has a history that sinks its roots deep into the Washington’s fertile Skagit Valley. “The Wallace family has been growing potatoes in the Skagit Valley since 1903 after emigrating from Ireland,” Secretary Jack Wallace told The Produce News Aug. 18. The current company was founded in the 1950s by brothers George and Dick Wallace, who farmed the same land farmed by their father, Robert Wallace, and their uncles George and Tom Wallace.

Los Angeles-based Oseguera Trucking Co. Inc., which specializes in loads into the Southern California region, added a cold-storage division in the late 1990s that is now too small to handle its current customers.

“Our next goal is to expand that facility,” said Jose Oseguera, general manager of the family-run operation. “That’s where we see our growth.”

From its Visalia, CA, office, Sierra Agricultural Transportation Inc. focuses most of its attention on securing eastbound rates for its perishable clients in California and Arizona and up the West Coast into the Northwest.

“We go to all points east,” said Transportation Manager Chad Lenaburg. “We do a lot of business in the Northeast and the Southeast as well as Texas.”

The transportation needs of shippers and receivers are ever evolving, and so are the services provided by the logistics experts at GenPro Inc., based in Rutherford, NJ.

Company President Robert Goldstein, who founded the firm as a truck brokerage operation more than 20 years ago, said that the industry is changing very rapidly. While there is still a need for delivery of transportation on a spot-market basis, more and more shippers and receivers are partnering with transportation companies to manage their transportation needs on an ongoing basis.

The Tom Lange Co. is knee-deep in the process of upgrading its computer technology and expects to roll out a new system with improved efficiency within the next three months to six months.
