“Today we service all categories of freight, but we continue to have a high profile in temperature controlled fresh produce logistics,” said Rob Goldstein, owner, president and founder of Genpro Inc., in Rutherford, NJ.

“We handle fresh fruits and vegetables as well as they can be handled, and we deal with thousands of carriers and thousands of loads every year,” he said.

The company, which Goldstein started shortly after graduating from college in 1989, does not have agents or brokers who are supported by outside companies.

Denise Goodman, vice president of M&R Tomato Distributors Inc., located on the Hunts Point Produce Market in the Bronx, NY, partners with her brother, Michael Tambor, company president, in overseeing the company’s operations.

Goodman’s daughter, Lisa Vogl, represents the third generation to work in the business. She joined the company three years ago and has been working throughout every aspect of the business to learn all about its operations.

“One of our company’s primary focuses is on tracing and tracking our drivers,” Paul Kazan, president of Target Interstate Systems Inc., at Hunts Point Produce Market in the Bronx, NY, told The Produce News.

“We use programs that drivers download to their apps, or we connect them into a system and they send pings to let us know where they are at all times. Once a driver is put on target mode, he is on a link that keeps us connected.”

Following a temporary move to adjacent offices at Hunts Point Produce Market, S. Katzman Produce Inc. didn’t miss a beat getting back to business. The fast move was caused by water and smoke damage to the company’s facility when a fire broke out at Mendez International Tropical Foods, located next to S. Katzman, last November.

“Fuel prices aren’t higher this year, but rates have been strong the entire year,” Lance Dichter, president of LD Logistics, headquartered at Hunts Point Produce Market in the Bronx, NY, told The Produce News. “This is primarily due to the shortage of trucks combined with stronger demand. We’ve seen rates get into high numbers much earlier this season. Prices peaked in April by about 20 percent higher than normal.”

“We are celebrating our 15th anniversary in business,” Ciro Porricelli, vice president of Jerry Porricelli Produce, which is located on the Hunts Point Produce Market, told The Produce News.

“But our family has several generations of experience in the produce industry. I named the business after my grandfather. My father, Angelo, took the company over from my grandfather. Dad turned 91 this year, and he still helps out in the office every day.”
