C&S Wholesale Grocers Inc. named Eric Winn its chief operating officer. In this newly created position, Winn will lead both the commercial and supply chain organizations to create a seamless customer experience. C&S Supply Chain Officer Peter Fiore will remain on the leadership team as a strategic advisor until his retirement at the end of 2022.

This year’s shorter onion crop has several sheds in the Treasure Valley of Idaho-E. Oregon, including Haun Packing, based in Weiser, ID, looking at finishing the 2021-’22 shipping season earlier than normal.

Cold temperatures in the California and Arizona desert growing regions are causing ice to form on lettuce crops. While no immediate quality impact is expected, Markon Cooperative’s quality assurance inspectors are actively monitoring for ice-related challenges in the coming days.

The U.S. Apple Association announced Mitchell Liwanag will join the organization as manager of association services. Liwanag brings a background of agriculture and association management experience to the role. His portfolio will include financial and office management; meeting logistics and program support; membership, data analysis and communications assistance; and congressional visit coordination.

While overall yields in the Northern Plains Potato Growers Association’s Red River Valley region of North Dakota, Northwestern Minnesota and extreme Eastern Montana, like yields in other growing areas across the country, were down by double-digits this year, one segment of the region’s production saw a notable bump in 2021.

The Hass Avocado Board’s recently published holiday retail recap reported sales volume and dollars for Father’s Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day totaling a combined 131.4 million units and $153 million in retail sales as the fruit remains an important part of each holiday’s celebrations. Sales of fresh Hass avocados continue to remain above pre-pandemic levels of 2019, while year-over-year sales and volume have softened in comparison to the produce sales boom during the start of the pandemic.
