Education is one of the key foundations of the Southeast Produce Council's mission, which is one reason why the council was proud to announce recently its newest scholarship program: SEPC Fresh Chefs.

But the deadline to apply is fast approaching. Applications must be submitted electronically by 5 p.m. EST on May 31.

Richard Johanson, the founder of Fresno, CA-based Johanson Transportation Service, died at the age of 96.

Mr. Johanson, a WWII veteran, left his leadership position at California Trucking Exchange, and founded Johanson Transportation Service on Aug. 1, 1971.  From humble beginnings in a diesel repair shop at a truck stop, he rented two small offices and began with three employees.

The New England Produce Council has scheduled two exciting events for the coming months: its annual golf tournament in July and its annual expo in August.

The golf tournament will take place Tuesday, July 19, at the Indian Pond Country Club, 60 Country Club Way, in Kingston, MA, to benefit the council's scholarship fund.

About 140 golfers took part in last year's event, held at the same venue, and a full complement of golfers is expected again this year, so the council is encouraging golfers to register early.
