Procuring fresh fruit when it’s not in season is hard — grapes especially.

“There’s something fundamental about grapes, which really makes them a challenge,” said Javier Hernandez, a director in global produce sourcing with Walmart Sourcing. “They are very complex, because they’re very perishable. And getting them in stores, flavorful and full, 52 weeks a year, that was a massive challenge.”

The California Table Grape Commission in Fresno, CA, provides retailers with a suite of opportunities to drive demand for California table grapes, which are available May through December.

The first grapes shipping from California’s San Joaquin Valley will see some overlap with the last of Mexico’s crop, but Grapeco Farms Co-owner Jared Lance said the high quality of both crops is a good sign for retail demand for the fruit from California.

Top Brass Produce, which handles all aspects of its table grape production, from harvesting through sales, is optimistic for this season’s crop as California’s Central Valley harvest starts.
