As mangos continue to gain momentum nationally, catching up with the rest of the world as the most-consumed fruit, the Ataulfo mango varietal continues to experience rapid growth among diverse organic consumers who tend to be health-oriented, well-traveled, and have a more sophisticated palette and culinary repertoire.

As of Jan. 25, the entry of Chilean plums under Systems Approach has been confirmed and published in the Federal Register, which is great news for U.S. retailers and consumers.

The United States is the main destination for fresh fruit from Chile in terms of volume, with a 31 percent share of total fresh fruit shipments exported to this market. In the case of plums, during the 2019-20 season, Chile exported more than 2 million boxes to the U.S. market. Plums will be available through April.

Carlos Cortes Sr., the grower who commercially introduced organic bananas to the United States in 1974, has died. Mr. Cortes was the father of Mayra Velazquez de León, president and CEO of Organics Unlimited and GROW.

In 1974, Mr. Cortes founded the Mexican-American Fruit Co., better known as MexAm. He began marketing organic bananas, which was an industry first for the U.S. market.
