Stemilt prepares for ‘world famous’ California cherry season
The 2026 California cherry season is shaping up to offer an early and potentially strong start. Stemilt Growers expressed optimism about the timing, volume and quality of this season’s fruit. While harvest potential is still developing, the indication points to a crop that slightly surpasses last year, due to favorable weather and strong bloom conditions. According to Brianna Shales, director of marketing, Stemilt is “looking forward to another world famous cherry season,” noting that warming temperatures have supported healthy orchard development and could position the crop well for ideal retail promotions this May.
California cherries often play a crucial role paving the way for the broader domestic season, providing retailers an early opening to collect the attention of consumers and drive category sales. Shales emphasized that Stemilt’s California program is, “setting the stage for a long season that lasts from May through August, allowing retailers to capture shelf space and bring in dollars to the category with a high-ring item often bought on impulse.” As a result, this season’s California cherries are expected to help establish momentum for the cherry category in the months ahead.
From a growing perspective, California weather continues to provide model conditions for the start of the season, thanks to warmer spring temperatures that are enhancing sweetness and firmness. These improvements, combined with careful harvesting and packing practices, move Stemilt in a direction to deliver a dependable eating experience that encourages repeat purchases throughout the season.
Retail wise, early expectations are positive, especially the potential alignment of promotable volume with key holiday windows such as Memorial Day. While it’s still a bit early on to determine exact merchandising tactics, an increase in availability should encourage retailers to expand further.
“With more volume, retailers may opt to increase display space through secondary display bins, or bringing in additional pack types to broaden the assortment,” said Shales. Approaches like this will maximize visibility and create more opportunities to motivate impulse purchases.
Consumer demand for cherries is still a mix of visual appeal and the actual eating experience. While pricing is still an important factor, Shales noted that quality eating experience is what ultimately leads to repeats in purchases, adding that “Offering cherries that are rich in color with bright green stems are all signs to consumers of a great cherry and can lead to more impulse buys.” Maintaining consistency while providing quality is key to stoking and sustaining consumer interest through the entirety of the season.
To reinforce retail attraction, Stemilt provides plenty of marketing tools, spanning from signage to display bins and point-of-sale advertisements designed to announce the arrival of California cherries. Shales added that they plan to offer their 5 River Islands cherry, “which grows exclusively in the California Delta region with packaging that calls out the optimal growing location that makes these cherries special.” According to Shales, Stemilt plans to “introduce new packaging for our dark-sweet, organic and Rainier cherries during the California season for a refreshed look that allows for fruit visibility while capturing attention at the point of sale,” as well as transitioning toward newer varieties, like Coral and Royal.
Since the California cherry season is relatively short and typically starts in late April and runs through June, building traction for early excitement is important. The introduction of cherries ahead of the Northwest season signals the transition into the spring and summer produce seasons, generating momentum that carries through the full domestic cherry window. “Cherries are a high-ring and high impact item and as long as flavor and quality deliver, California can help set the tone for a great, long season ahead. For a retailer, it’s all about capturing a larger ring for as many weeks as possible” said Shales.
Weather will continue to be an element as crops progress through development and harvest. Fortunately, early conditions from favorable pollination weather and average chill accumulation, point toward an optimistic outlook. With slightly earlier timing compared to last year, Stemilt sees opportunity to further grow the category. By delivering a strong early start, California cherries are well positioned to set the stage for a successful and extended cherry season.
