Charlie Eagle, vice president of business development for Southern Specialties, headquartered in Pompano Beach, FL, told The Produce News that the company always looks forward to the Produce Marketing Association Foodservice Conference & Expo in Monterey, CA, this year on July 26-28.

“We are in attendance at the expo to meet with our foodservice customers,” said Eagle. “I’ll be joined by Susana Troop, senior account manager, foodservice division, and Daryl Johnston, vice president of sales.”

Louis Hymel, director of purchasing and marketing for the Orlando, FL-based Spice World, told The Produce News that the company will be exhibiting at booth number 129 at the Produce Marketing Association Foodservice Conference & Expo in Monterey, CA, on July 26-28.

“Mitch DiMarco, our vice president of foodservice, will join me at the expo,” said Hymel. “We’ll have all of our popular products on hand, including our line of fresh and processed garlic and our extensive line of spices and herbs.”

Katie Goetz, public information officer for the New Mexico Department of Agriculture, said the effects of winter weather are expected to reduce the state's onion volume slightly in 2013. "New Mexico experienced a cooler-than-normal winter which affected the crop yield for over-winter onions," she told The Produce News. "Yields are down a bit but not drastically. Some of the early onions might not size like they normally do. But spring-seeded onions should yield and size normally."

In time to celebrate America's birthday, the first shipment of citrus from South Africa arrived July 3 at Holt Terminal in Gloucester City, NJ, aboard the refrigerated vessel, Nagato Reefer.

Onboard were 245,000 cartons of clementines, and Navel and Cara Cara oranges. Some early-season citrus, including Star Ruby grapefruit arrived in June in containers.

Belle Foods, based in Birmingham, AL, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, noting that it owes creditors more than $42 million.

Although Cañon Potato, a family-owned operation that had packed and shipped potatoes for six decades, made the decision to cease operations recently, the Center, CO, packingshed will continue to operate under the new ownership of Houston, TX-based MountainKing Potatoes.
