SALINAS SCENE: Driscoll Strawberry Associates names director of packaging
Watsonville, CA-based Driscoll Strawberry Associates Inc. announced the appointment of Lynn Avery to the newly created position of director of packaging.
Mr. Avery, who joined Driscoll July 15, has 30 years of packaging experience, most recently as director of purchasing for Earthbound Farms. His experience also includes management roles with several Fortune 500 packaging companies and the management of supplier alliances for the Coca Cola Co.
Driscoll Chief Executive Officer Miles Reiter said that Mr. Avery brings a wealth of packaging expertise to the company and that "his varied experience makes him uniquely qualified to fill this role."
As director of packaging a senior management position Mr. Avery will be responsible for the leadership and management of various packaging functions, including purchasing, engineering, quality control and supplier alliance.
Mr. Avery holds a bachelor of arts degree in business administration from Missouri State University and has an extensive background in the management of packaging operations.
Hurricane Katrina fundraiser
Both Castroville, CA-based Ocean Mist Farms and Salinas-based Mills Family Farms were premier sponsors for a fundraiser in support of Hurricane Katrina relief, which was scheduled to be held Oct. 7 at Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey.
More than 50 top Monterey Peninsula chefs and 40 wineries and breweries were to be featured. The fundraiser was the brainchild of Chef Todd Fisher of Hullabaloo Restaurant in Salinas.
Ocean Mist officials said that the company donated $10,000 to help get the event started and expected to donate food to the event. Jim Mills of Salinas-based Mills Family Farms said that his company was ready and willing to donate food to the event and has much involvement with local chefs throughout the year. Mr. Mills said that the company's involvement in the event is a win-win because Mills gets to help Hurricane Katrina victims and show support for chefs in the tri-county area Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito counties.
One hundred percent of the proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross in support of Hurricane Katrina relief.
Design team recognized for Well-Pict campaign
Marketing Plus and Zylka Design in Fresno, CA, have been recognized in Japan for their promotional design work for Watsonville, CA-based Well-Pict Berries Inc.
The newly published second edition of Promotion Design a Japanese ad design source guide features the marketing-design teams most recent promotional campaigns for Well-Pict.
The Well-Pict campaign is the only featured work that promotes fresh produce and runs alongside campaigns for companies such as Pepsi and Honda. The book features several pages of ad images and materials from the Well-Pict campaign, which includes such diverse elements as print ads, recipe books, promotional giveaways, and an exhibit booth for industry trade shows.
The Marketing Plus and Zylka Design creative team has handled the Well-Pict account for over 20 years. Other produce industry clients of Marketing Plus and Zylka Design include Coastline Produce in Salinas, CA; Pacific AgPak in Watsonville, CA; Simonian Fruit Co. in Fowler, CA; Cecelia Packing Corp. in Orange Cove, CA; Hursts Berry Farm in Sheridan, OR; and the pomegranate council.
Pride of San Juan to be featured on Emeril Live!
Emeril Live!, the No. 1 cooking television show in the United States, will air an episode featuring Pride of San Juan, the grower behind the Emerils gourmet produce brand.
The episode, titled Emeril Fresh from the Farm, will feature Emeril Lagasse and Stephen Wyrick on location at PSJs San Juan Bautista farms and Mr. Lagasse cooking some of the featured produce. The show will air Oct. 12 at 8 p.m. in all time zones on on the Food Network. PSJ owner Stephen Wyrick and his wife, Tiffany, will be present in the studio.
The episode will start on the farm and then transition to the Emeril Live! studios where Mr. Lagasse will cook several dishes featuring the salads, herbs and tomatoes shown on the farm footage.
In 2004, Mr. Emeril and PSJ partnered to bring gourmet produce to consumers nationwide. Emerils gourmet produce features select spring mixes, whole leaf, herbs, tomatoes and other gourmet and seasonal produce. Emerils gourmet produce provides consumers with unique items and kicked-up packaging along with recipes from Mr. Lagasse.
