SALINAS SCENE: D'Arrigo supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, D'Arrigo Bros. Co. of California in Salinas will sponsor a local Florida cooking show and work with Florida retailers to promote DArrigos "Andy Boy" broccoli rabe throughout October.
Health benefit information on the links between breast cancer prevention and cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli rabe will be found on in-store signage and recipe cards and in local newspapers.
Margaret DArrigo-Martin, senior vice president of business development for DArrigo Bros. Co. of California, has teamed up with television celebrity Lou DeAngelis from the show My Italian Kitchen. The show features real Italian cooking that is inexpensive yet prepared with old world flavors and style. Mr. DeAngelis show airs weeknights at 7 p.m. in Floridas heartland. He will have four shows devoted to Andy Boy brand produce and breast cancer awareness that will air through the end of the year.
The DArrigo Bros. companies have been sponsors of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation since 1998. Ms. DArrigo-Martin said that people think the company supports breast cancer research because of an illness in the DArrigo family, but that is not the case. We feel that our industry has the products that can help prevent this national killer that affects men and women, Ms. DArrigo-Martin said. Also, our pink label was the perfect tie-in to help consumers associate healthy vegetables with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation pink ribbon logo.
Andy Boy broccoli rabe is available year-round and packed in 20-bunch cartons or 10-bunch half packs.
T&A employees donate to Red Cross

Strawberry fund to host golf tournament
The California Strawberry Growers Scholarship Fund is hosting a golf tournament Oct. 6 at the Seascape Golf Course in Aptos, CA. All proceeds generated from the tournament will provide scholarship awards to children of strawberry farm workers.
This tournament organized by industry volunteers is the primary fundraiser for the scholarship program that awards over 60 scholarships per school year to students furthering their educations. The 2004 event raised $22,000 for the fund.
The Strawberry Growers Scholarship Fund was established in 1995 to provide continuing scholarships to students who received initial one-year awards from the California Strawberry Commission. This non-profit fund is supported by California strawberry growers, shippers, processors and affiliated industry members and it enables children of strawberry farm workers to further their educational goals.
Those interested in sponsoring or participating in the Oct. 6 tournament should contact Cindy Jewell at California Giant Inc. at 831/728-1773 or [email protected].
