Frieda Rapoport Caplan Family Business Scholarships awarded
The United Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Association in Washington, DC, has announced the recipients of the 2005 Frieda Rapoport Caplan Family Business Scholarships.
Presented by the United Research & Education Foundation, the scholarship awards the recipients -- Frederic (Fred) M. Recchiuti from Basciani Mushroom Farms in Avondale, PA, and Elizabeth (Beth) Gross from Capurro Marketing LLC in Moss Landing, CA -- with complimentary airfare, hotel and registration to attend United's Washington Public Policy Conference Sept. 13-16 in Washington at the Washington Court Hotel.
"We are extremely pleased to continue the tradition of this scholarship program and provide an opportunity for these exceptional family business members to visit our nation's capital," said scholarship sponsor Karen Caplan, president and CEO of Frieda's Inc. "I'm confident that Fred and Beth will find immense value in their participation in this important produce industry advocacy event.
The 2005 scholarship recipients come from distinct regions of the United States. Mr. Recchiuti is the general manager for Basciani Mushroom Farms, based southwest of Philadelphia in the "Mushroom Capital of the World. Basciani Mushroom Farms has been in continuous operation since the 1920s. Mr. Recchiuti also serves on the local MushroomPAC board of directors.
Ms. Gross is the business analyst for Capurro Marketing, which was founded in 1923. She started her produce career at age 13 working summers on the farm; she is the fourth generation in her family to work in the produce industry.
"Thanks to the generosity of Karen Caplan and her sister, Jackie Caplan Wiggins, we have a tremendous opportunity to provide these scholarship recipients with first-hand knowledge about the importance of having an active voice in Washington, said Victoria Kuhns, United's vice president of education. "We are extremely grateful to their continued sponsorship and support.
In an effort to educate members of Congress on policy issues that affect the produce industry, WPPC participants will be part of one of the larger contingents of produce industry members to ever march on Capitol Hill. Attendees will also participate in the annual Fresh Festival on Capitol Hill, interactive workshops and a choice of three concurrent educational programs: a White House briefing, a roundtable discussion with staff from the House and Senate produce caucuses, and a guided tour of the National Gallery of Art.
Now in its fifth year, the Frieda Rapoport Caplan Family Business Scholarship Program is made possible by a generous grant from Frieda's Inc. to the United Research & Education Foundation. United accepts new applications for the program each year and is proud to offer representatives of family businesses the opportunity to attend United's annual Washington Public Policy Conference and help make a positive difference for the produce industry.
