Gino Scialdone, long-time Dole employee, was 75
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CA -- Dole retiree Gino Scialdone died Aug. 15 after battling Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS or Lou Gherig's Disease. He was 75.
Mr. Scialdone retired from Dole in 2002 after more than 40 years of dedicated service.
In 1960, he joined Standard Fruit & Steamship Co. in New Orleans as a railroad fruit inspector. In 1964, while working, he attended Loyola University School of Labor Relations & Management in New Orleans. In 1966 after the closing of the New Orleans terminal, he moved to the new Gulfport operation and was promoted to terminal manager. Soon after, he became regional manager for the Gulf and later assumed the position of central and western division manager, responsible for the Gulf and West Coast operations.
In 1980 he also took on the East Coast and was appointed director of U.S. terminal operations. In 1992, he was named vice president of operations for U.S ports and terminals, with responsibilities for six ports.
Mr. Scialdone founded the Gulf Coast Italian American Cultural Society, was a founding member of Goodwill Industries of South Mississippi and served on the boards of numerous charities and civic organizations.
