Wholesum expands Lil’ Ones snacking line with launch of organic baby cucumbers
As demand for convenient, healthy produce snacks continues to grow, Wholesum is expanding its Lil’ Ones brand with the official launch of Lil’ Ones Organic Baby Cucumbers at this year’s Organic Produce Summit.
The introduction marks the next chapter for the company’s snacking-focused line, which debuted with organic pearl tomatoes and was designed to make fresh organic produce more approachable, portable and fun for consumers.
“OPS marks the official rollout of Lil’ Ones Organic Baby Cucumbers,” said Joanna Jaramillo, marketing manager for Wholesum, based in Amado, AZ. “The product will initially be available in convenient 8-ounce bags and will be supplied year-round.”
The launch represents more than simply adding another SKU to the company’s portfolio. For Wholesum, it reflects a broader strategy of growing organic produce consumption through products that align with modern eating habits while delivering quality, flavor and convenience.
A natural extension
According to Wholesum, baby cucumbers are a natural extension of the Lil’ Ones concept.
Like the brand’s organic pearl tomatoes, the cucumbers are designed as a grab-and-go snack option for consumers seeking fresh, healthy alternatives throughout the day.
“Baby cucumbers are a natural extension of the Lil’ Ones portfolio,” Jaramillo said. “Like our pearl tomatoes, they offer a convenient, healthy, grab-and-go snacking option that appeals to consumers looking for fresh, flavorful produce in a fun and approachable format.”
The company spent considerable time refining the program before bringing it to market.
While Wholesum has worked with baby cucumbers previously, company officials said they took a measured approach to perfecting postharvest handling practices, packaging materials and storage conditions to ensure consistent quality and shelf life.
The result is a product that delivers the cool, crisp eating experience consumers expect while maintaining quality throughout distribution and retail merchandising.
The cucumbers are packed using packaging technology designed to minimize condensation and extend shelf life, helping preserve freshness from greenhouse to consumer.
Building a consumer brand
Wholesum has invested heavily in creating a distinctive identity for the Lil’ Ones line, positioning it as more than simply a package of produce.
The brand centers on the idea that “joy can be found in life’s smallest moments,” reflected through whimsical packaging artwork featuring ferris wheels, meadows, butterflies and picnic scenes.
With the addition of baby cucumbers, that visual story expands.
The new package design follows what the company calls the “Tasty Trail” to a lakeside destination nestled beneath mountain scenery, reinforcing the refreshing qualities associated with the product.
Lil’ Ones products carry the tagline, It’s the ‘lil things, a message intended to connect with consumers seeking simple, healthy moments throughout their day.
“The new organic baby cucumbers are cool, crisp, refreshing,” Jaramillo said. “Lil’ Ones products are designed for consumers seeking convenient, healthy snacks that fit seamlessly into everyday moments.”
The new program will be supplied from Wholesum Farms Sonora, where recent greenhouse expansion has created additional capacity for both current production and future growth.
“The cucumbers will be grown at Wholesum Farms Sonora, where a recent greenhouse expansion has provided the capacity needed to support year-round production and future growth of the program,” Jaramillo said.
Year-round availability has become increasingly important as retailers continue expanding produce snacking sets and seek consistent supply across all seasons.
The launch also aligns with broader consumer trends favoring fresh, minimally processed snacks and portable produce options.
Innovation remains a priority
As Wholesum approaches its 100th anniversary, company leaders view innovation as a key driver of future growth.
The launch of Lil’ Ones Organic Baby Cucumbers reflects the company’s ongoing effort to make organic produce more accessible while creating new opportunities for retailers and consumers alike.
For Wholesum, OPS provides an ideal venue to introduce the new product.
“As a company dedicated exclusively to organic produce, OPS is one of the most important events of the year for Wholesum,” Jaramillo said. “It brings together the leaders, innovators and advocates who are shaping the future of organic agriculture.”
Beyond generating sales opportunities, Wholesum sees the event as an opportunity to contribute to the advancement of the organic category through innovation and collaboration.
“Consumers deserve the very best in quality, flavor, convenience and innovation,” Jaramillo said. “For Wholesum, success means helping ensure that organic produce not only keeps pace with conventional offerings but continues to lead the way.”
With the addition of baby cucumbers, the company is betting that consumers’ appetite for convenient organic snacking will continue to grow.
