Dependability drives D’Arrigo New York’s continued success
For a company that has spent generations serving New York’s produce industry, consistency remains the foundation of success at D’Arrigo New York.
Based at the Hunts Point Terminal Market in the Bronx, D’Arrigo New York has long been a key supplier to independent retailers, neighborhood grocers and produce operators throughout the metropolitan area. While the produce industry continues facing inflationary pressures, supply chain challenges and changing consumer habits, the company has relied on its experience and relationships to navigate the marketplace.
“Overall, 2026 has been pretty consistent,” said Gabriela D’Arrigo, vice president of marketing for the company. “There hasn’t been anything too crazy or outside of what everybody else has been experiencing with inflation and pricing. In wholesale, we’re able to work with suppliers, inventory and volumes to try to be as cost-effective as possible for our customers.”
That ability to adapt has helped the company maintain stability despite the constant fluctuations that characterize the produce business.
“In wholesale, you’re so used to instability that it’s kind of like another Tuesday,” D’Arrigo said.
As summer arrives, the company is seeing familiar seasonal trends emerge throughout the produce department.
“A lot of the same patterns repeat every year,” D’Arrigo said. “Fruits always see a big uptick in the summer. Berries, watermelons and melons are very popular because they’re refreshing and fit the season.”
The company is also seeing strong movement in salad-related categories as consumers shift toward lighter meals during the warmer months.
“Romaine hearts, spring mixes, spinach and mesclun continue to perform well,” D’Arrigo said. “People gravitate toward salads and lighter foods during the summer.”
While weather disruptions and supply issues affect virtually every part of agriculture, D’Arrigo said the company’s broad sourcing network helps minimize interruptions.
“There’s always weather somewhere, transportation challenges somewhere or labor issues somewhere,” D’Arrigo said. “Because we source from so many different suppliers, both domestically and internationally, we’re usually able to maintain a consistent supply.”
That flexibility is one reason the company has remained successful for decades.
“Providing stability in the middle of all that instability is really what we do,” D’Arrigo said.
The company’s home at Hunts Point remains a major part of its identity.
“The market is home,” D’Arrigo said. “We’ve been there since Hunts Point was built, and before that our family was part of the original New York market down in what is now the financial district.”
While competition exists among the merchants, D’Arrigo said there is also a strong sense of shared purpose.
“At the end of the day, we all know we’re part of what feeds New York City,” she said. “There’s a camaraderie because we understand how important the market is to so many businesses throughout the region.”
The company’s customer base remains centered on independent retailers and neighborhood operators that continue serving communities across New York.
“Our bread and butter is the independent sector,” D’Arrigo said. “We work hard to help those businesses grow because New York needs those independents. That’s what fuels the city.”
D’Arrigo New York is also investing in technology, logistics and employee development to strengthen operations.
“We’re always looking at new technologies and ways to improve accuracy, logistics and product integrity,” D’Arrigo said. “At the same time, we continue investing in our employees because you’re only as good as the people who work for you.”
Looking ahead, D’Arrigo believes the company’s future will continue to be guided by the same principles that have sustained it for generations.
“The reason we’ve been successful for so long is consistency,” D’Arrigo said. “We want to remain dependable above all else.”
