Nash Produce prides itself on its local grower network

Mr. Yam is bulking up at Nash Produce.

“We are excited to announce that we have expanded our Mr. Yam line to include bulk 40-pound boxes,” Rebecca Scott, grower accounting/marketing director at Nash Produce, based in Nashville, NC, told The Produce News. “Our value-added line already includes individually wrapped microwavable potatoes, Steamables and two-, five-, eight- and 10-pound mesh bags consisting of both conventional and organic locally grown sweet potatoes.”

Nash’s sweet potato packaging offerings have expanded in recent years to meet consumer demands.

09-13-20 “While we still continue to offer sweet potatoes in bulk, our various bag sizes benefit both retailers and consumers. Our mesh bags include handles for consumer convenience during a grab-and-go grocery trip, while the availability of multiple size options allow retailers to select which size or sizes would best suit their individual needs,” Scott explained.

In addition to Mr. Yam, Nash Produce also markets its sweet potatoes under the Cajun Gold, Nash’s Gold, Oh So Sweet and Nash’s Pride brand names.

“Domestically, we mainly supply sweet potatoes to the eastern half of the United States. Our potatoes can also be enjoyed internationally in Mexico, Canada, the United Kingdom and throughout the European Union,” Scott said.

Yet, despite a near global presence, Nash Produce sweet potatoes exude a local feel.

“Here at Nash Produce, we are not your typical produce packer,” Scott noted.

“Our experienced staff, dedicated group of growers, and large facility allow us to provide exceptional service to our customers while also providing sweet potatoes year-round. Even though our sweet potatoes travel all over the world, every sweet potato we pack comes from local family farms in neighboring counties,” she said.

“We are truly a unified family of growers and employees that work together to meet and exceed expectations from the sweet potato field to consumers’ dinner plates,” Scott said.

“This year, our growers have increased their acreage amount to correlate with the rise in consumer demand,” Scott said. “From the fields to the packhouse, we are pleased to offer Covington, Bonita and Murasaki sweet potatoes for consumers to enjoy. While the Covington reflects the sweet, orange colored potato that consumers typically associate with a sweet potato, the Bonita and Murasaki varieties reflect slightly different attributes.

The Bonita possess a brown skin with a white interior, while the Murasaki has a purple skin with a white interior. Each variety represents a slightly different flavor while continuing to provide a healthy side, snack or main dish for the whole family!”

Scott noted that the season got off to a rough start, with little to no rainfall and abnormally high temperatures during planting. The good news is that the potatoes ended up sizing up nicely, largely thanks to rains from Hurricane Dorian.

“The fields actually benefitted from the rain we received from Hurricane Dorian, while the wind, of course, had no impact on our crop. We are keeping our fingers crossed that Mother Nature will continue to be fair for the remainder of the season,” Scott said.

As a result, Scott pointed out that prices are remaining steady.

“We are hopeful that they will continue that way for the upcoming 2019 crop,” she said.
