Walmart launches meal kits

Following on the heels of Amazon, which began selling meal kits last summer, the nation’s largest retailer announced that it is now offering meal kits at certain locations, with more to come later this year.

Walmart’s meal kit offerings are pre-portioned and are similar to the Blue Apron model in that they contain the ingredients and preparation instructions for a home chef to prepare, but at $8 to $15, they are about half the cost of Blue Apron.

Designed to serve two, the meal kit choices include Steak Dijon, Basil Garlic Chicken, Sweet Chili Chicken Stir Fry and Pork Florentine. Walmart also offers ready-made meals that simply need to be heated. All dishes were developed at the retailer’s Culinary & Innovation Center.

“Customers are busier than ever and we know getting a delicious dinner on the table can be a chore,” Tyler Lehr, senior vice president and general merchandise manager of deli services for Walmart U.S., said in a press release. “We’re here to help. These delicious meals give the best or worst of cooks a fresh, easy option for dinner tonight, or later this week.”

Aside from the lower cost, Walmart said its meal kits appeal to consumers because they can be purchased right away without requiring a subscription, which requires some level of planning. The kits are currently available in 250 stores nationwide and Walmart will be adding them in 2,000 more locations this year.
