Western Fumigation introduces Western PurClean

Accordingly, Western Fumigation has innovated with a new service to answer arising concerns for disinfecting food businesses and the offices driving that industry.

Miriam Borja-Fisher, senior business development manager of Western Fumigation, said the firm has taken advantage of the varied and broad national expertise of its sister companies to create a new service, branded as Western PurClean Disinfection.

“This will help many current and potential customers,” Borja-Fisher said.

Western Fumigation has for decades been a leader in fumigating fruit and other cargo passing through the ports of the Delaware River. That work, of course, is ongoing.

Of particular note, she noted that Western Fumigation has continued its traditional fumigation work at the Gloucester Marine Terminal this summer. “That is all as-normal. There have been no issues.”

Borja-Fisher said in late June that, in Western PurClean which is “a powerful and effective disinfection treatment.” Western indicates that it will kill 99.99 percent of bacteria, fungi, and viruses (as listed on the disinfectant label) including H1N1 Swine Flu and other pathogenic microbes on hard, non-porous surfaces while also sanitizing soft, porous surfaces.

The roll-out of the service was underway early this summer.

Trained professional workers enter facilities to disinfect human touch points with the disinfectant Vital Oxide. The second part of the treatment, Borja said, is a mist of an entire room. The mist dries on its own and then the facility is ready to use.

The firm’s promotional material indicates that the Western PurClean treatment utilizes the disinfectant Vital Oxide, which is rated as Toxicity Category IV, EPA’s lowest toxicity rating, defined as "practically non-toxic and not an irritant”. It contains no ozone-harming volatile organic compounds and is mild on skin, hard surfaces, and fabrics.

Furthermore, Vital Oxide is rated "no rinse required on food contact surfaces," category D2, by NSF International – meaning it is approved for use on food contact surface areas without the need to wash or rinse after application.

Borja said Western Fumigation is regarded as an “essential business”, so, it was never required to close during the Covid-19 pandemic.

While the fruit business along the Delaware River has operated in somewhat a normal fashion this year, Borja, who is a widely involved industry leader, said the social shutdown from Covid has stopped traditional annual industry meetings, which in turn has had a “huge” negative impact on the revenue stream for these groups. “We’re trying to get people to support these groups as much as we can,” with the use of Zoom and other communications options.
