Mushroom value hits all-time high

According to a report released on Aug. 21 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service, the value of mushrooms produced in the United States hit an all-time high last year of $1.22 billion. Temple, PA-based Giorgio Fresh Co. plays an integral role in that production increase.

The company, a third-generation family business with nearly 100 years of experience, is a leading producer of all mushroom varieties as well as organic options.

Doug Stewart, vice president of sales for Giorgio Fresh, said the company will exhibit again at this year’s New England Produce Council 2017 Expo, Sept. 12-13, at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center in Boston.

“The New England retailers and foodservice companies support this show by attending,” said Stewart. “We have strong relationships with many of these companies, and the show is an opportunity to have time to talk and review relevant issues with them. It is also a great place to showcase Giorgio Fresh’s mushrooms to companies we would like to partner with in the future.”

In addition to Stewart, Giorgio Fresh will be represented at the expo by Mark Leone, vice president of sales, Mid-Atlantic; Brian Threlfall, executive vice president of sales and marketing; Greg Sagan, senior vice president of sales; and Bill Litvin, senior vice president of sales.

Giorgio Fresh is a strong proponent of the Mushroom Council’s The Blend initiative, to which the American Mushroom Institute greatly attributes the increased demand and consequent increasing production.

Giorgio Fresh also strongly promotes the health and nutritional benefits of mushrooms, and clearly states that they are low in calories and sodium, fat- and cholesterol-free and they provide important natural antioxidants.

Mushrooms lay claim to being the only product in the produce aisle that provide Vitamin D, and Giorgio’s Vitamin D enhanced mushrooms provide 100 percent of the recommended dietary allowance.
